When a Tree Has to Come Out
Tree removal on a Cincinnati lot almost never means notching the trunk and letting the whole tree fall. Houses here sit close together, backyards slope toward alleys and creeks, and garages, fences and stone walls are often within reach of a mature canopy. So most removals are done in sections: limbs first, then the trunk in pieces, with anything heavy lowered on rope instead of dropped. How long that takes, and what it costs, depends far more on what is underneath the tree than on its height.
Signs a tree is past saving
Some cases are clear. A tree with no leaves in midsummer, a trunk with a long vertical crack, mushrooms or conks at the base, or a fresh lean with soil heaved up on one side is a removal candidate. So is an ash that lost most of its canopy years ago. Other cases are judgment calls: a healthy silver maple dropping big limbs on the roof every winter, a sweetgum lifting a driveway, a tree of heaven sprouting along a foundation. We tell you what we see, and when pruning or cabling would solve the problem for less, we say that too.
Rules to check first
In the City of Cincinnati, a tree in the right-of-way, usually the tree lawn between sidewalk and curb, is a public tree. Removing one, pruning one, or working within 15 feet of one needs a Public Tree Work Permit from Cincinnati Parks under Chapter 743 of the Municipal Code, and the city's Urban Forestry program may remove a failing street tree itself. For trees on private property, we have not found a city permit requirement for ordinary removal, but some suburbs, historic districts and HOAs have their own rules, and the Kentucky cities across the river set theirs separately. We check the address before quoting.
Trees near the service drop
The wire that runs from a Duke Energy pole to your meter is the property owner's responsibility to keep clear of branches. Before we work near it, Duke de-energizes the line at no cost to you. Trees touching primary lines on the poles are left to Duke's line-clearance crews.
Removal on a slope
About a fifth of Cincinnati is hillside, and ODNR warns that cutting vegetation on landslide-prone slopes can set a slide in motion. On those lots we usually cut the trunk low and leave the root plate in the ground, and we talk with you about replanting so the bank is not left bare.
The wood
You decide: logs left in rounds for firewood, stacked, or hauled away; brush chipped and the chips left for mulch or removed. Hamilton County is under a spotted lanternfly quarantine, so firewood should be checked for egg masses and not carried far.
What Tree Removal Includes
A removal quote spells out each of these parts, so you know what is and is not included.
Sectional takedown
Limbs and trunk sections cut from the top and lowered on rope where they cannot be dropped safely.
Felling where there is room
On open ground, a tree may be dropped in one piece, which is faster and usually cheaper.
Low cuts on slopes
Stumps left low and roots left in place on hillsides where the soil needs holding.
Brush and chip handling
Branches chipped on site; chips left for your beds or hauled off.
Log options
Rounds left for firewood, stacked by the garage, or taken away.
Stump grinding add-on
The stump ground below grade at the same visit, priced on its own line.

How a Removal Goes
1. Site visit
We look at the tree, what is under it, wires, slope and the route out for wood.
2. Ownership and permits
We confirm the tree is yours and flag any street tree, HOA or utility issue.
3. Price in writing
Method, cleanup, logs, stump and price on one line per tree.
4. Utility coordination
If the service drop is in the way, Duke de-energizes it before cutting.
5. Takedown
Limbs and trunk removed in sections, with lawns and beds protected.
6. Site cleanup
Chips, logs and debris handled as agreed; the yard raked and blown off.

Tree Removal Questions
How much does tree removal cost in Cincinnati?
LawnStarter's Cincinnati figures average about $301 for a small tree, $696 for a medium tree and $1,862 for a large tree. National 2026 guides from HomeGuide run from $200 for a tree under 30 feet to $2,000 or more for one over 60 feet. Tight access, slopes and trees over roofs push the price up. Your written estimate is the price.
Can the city remove the tree in front of my house?
If it stands in the public right-of-way in the City of Cincinnati, it is a public tree, and Urban Forestry handles removal and replanting through the assessment on your tax bill. Request it through 311. Removing it yourself or through a private company needs a Public Tree Work Permit.
Do you take the stump too?
Only if you want it gone. Stump grinding is listed as its own line on the quote so you can choose. On steep slopes we may suggest leaving the stump and roots in place to help hold the soil.
What happens to all the wood?
You choose. Brush is chipped, and the chips can stay for mulch or leave with us. Logs can be left in rounds, cut to firewood length or hauled away. With spotted lanternfly in Hamilton County, firewood is best kept close to where it was cut.
Is winter a good time for tree removal?
Often, yes. Without leaves the structure of the tree is easier to see, and frozen ground is firmer under equipment. Wet, thawing ground on a slope is the exception, and we may wait for it to firm up.
