Working on Cincinnati's Hills
Tree Service in Cincinnati is shaped by the ground under it. The city spreads over hills, bluffs and low ridges above the Ohio River, and the old nickname, City of Seven Hills, comes from the crescent of Mount Adams, Walnut Hills, Mount Auburn, Vine Street Hill, College Hill, Fairmount and Price Hill. A maple behind a house in Price Hill can stand twenty feet below the street on one side and level with the second floor on the other. That changes how a tree is rigged, where brush can be stacked and whether a lift can reach it at all. We plan every Cincinnati job from the slope up.
Is the tree yours or the city's?
This is the first question on almost every call. Cincinnati Parks' Urban Forestry team maintains city street trees, meaning trees in the public right-of-way, which on most blocks is the tree lawn between the sidewalk and the curb. The program has been funded since 1981 by an annual assessment based on each parcel's frontage along the right-of-way; the rate for the 2026 assessment is $0.31 per front foot, billed on the Hamilton County property tax bill. That money pays for a six-year preventive maintenance cycle, routine stump grinding and replacement of removed street trees.
So if the tree that worries you is in the tree lawn, the first call may belong to the city, not to us. Cincinnati's 311 system takes public tree removal and pruning requests, and Forestry states it will only remove trees in poor condition: dead, diseased, declining, defective or damaged.
Private work near a public tree needs a permit
Cincinnati Parks requires a public tree work permit for anyone who will plant, prune, remove, apply chemicals to, work within 15 feet of, or otherwise affect a public tree. The fee is 1% of the cost of work over $500 under Chapter 743 of the Municipal Code, and the permit lists the dates the work is allowed. That 15-foot line catches more jobs than people expect: taking down a backyard tree is private, but dropping it toward the street, parking a chipper on the tree lawn or grinding a stump next to a street tree can bring the permit into play. The form also requires Ohio Utilities Protection Service notice two working days ahead of digging, and it holds permitted work to ANSI A300 pruning and ANSI Z133 safety standards. We sort this out at the estimate so the work date doesn't slip.
What we see most in the city
- Large silver maples and hackberries crowding older frame houses on narrow lots
- Dead ash, now common across Ohio since emerald ash borer spread statewide
- Trees on hillsides above retaining walls, where a lean can load the wall
- Limbs over alleys and shared driveways in neighborhoods like Northside and Oakley
- Volunteer trees grown up through fences behind rowhouses in Over-the-Rhine and Mount Auburn
- Storm-broken tops after summer thunderstorms, which the city's own climate record lists as common in the warm months
Rental-heavy streets
Census figures put Cincinnati's owner-occupied housing rate at 39.8%, so a large share of tree calls come from landlords and property managers rather than owners living on site. If that is you, we can meet a tenant or work from photos for the first look, then send a written estimate that spells out which trees, what cuts and what cleanup.

Cincinnati Questions
Will the city remove the tree in front of my house in Cincinnati?
If it is a street tree in the right-of-way and it is dead, diseased, declining, defective or damaged, Cincinnati Forestry may remove it after you file a 311 request. Healthy street trees generally stay. For a tree on your side of the property line, the work is yours to arrange.
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in my own backyard?
The Parks permit covers public trees and work within 15 feet of them. A backyard tree well away from the right-of-way usually falls outside it, but historic districts and deed rules can add their own conditions. We check the location against the street trees before we quote.
How do you take down a tree on a steep Cincinnati lot?
Usually in sections, lowered on ropes so nothing rolls downhill into a wall, fence or neighbor's yard. Where a lift or crane can't set up on the slope, a climber does the work. The method goes in the written estimate.
Is there a tree service near me that handles both private and permit work?
Yes. We work across Cincinnati's neighborhoods and will tell you at the estimate whether any part of the job touches a public tree, so the permit can be filed before work day.
