Trees in a Planned Village
Tree Service in Mariemont takes place inside a piece of planning history. Mary Emery founded the village, John Nolen and a team of leading American architects laid it out, and ground was broken on April 23, 1923. In 2007 the Village of Mariemont was designated a National Historic Landmark. It is small, under one square mile, with about 3,500 residents, and the homes, greens and street trees were designed to work together. Taking a tree out of that picture deserves some thought.
Know whose tree it is before anyone cuts. Mariemont's Service Department says plainly that the village has a right-of-way on every street and that it plants and cares for trees in public areas. Its advice is to call the Service Department before doing any cutting or trimming if you are unsure whether a tree is yours or the village's. We follow the same rule. If a tree near the street or a common green might be public, we will ask you to confirm with the village before we schedule the work.
A village with a tree board. Council created the Mariemont Tree Advisory Board by Ordinance O-9-21 on February 8, 2021, and the village is a Tree City USA community. The board runs a volunteer program and keeps residents informed about the urban canopy. For homeowners, the practical effect is that people here notice when a mature tree disappears, so a written explanation of why a tree needs to come down is worth having.
Getting rid of limbs the village way. Mariemont's Service Department, not the trash hauler, collects limbs and brush longer than 24 inches. Pickups run on the first and third Monday and Tuesday of each month by route. Bundles must be no longer than 8 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds, set at the curb after 6 p.m. the night before. Branches under 2 inches thick and under 4 feet long, including honeysuckle, go in brown paper yard bags for Rumpke on Tuesdays from March through mid-December. Leaves are vacuumed from mid-October until about the third week of December. If you prune a shrub or small tree yourself, those rules are useful. When we do the work, we chip and haul everything, so nothing sits at the curb.
What Mariemont jobs usually involve
- Lowering limbs in sections over older roofs and closely set garages
- Crown cleaning on mature shade trees along the older streets
- Removing dead ash and storm-damaged limbs
- Pruning ornamentals that frame front entries and walks
- Stump grinding in small yards where a stump blocks a garden bed
Small lots, careful setups. Homes in the village sit close together, and many yards are reached only by a walk or a narrow drive. We plan where each piece will be lowered and how it leaves the property, and we protect walks and beds along the way.

Mariemont Questions
Can I prune the tree between my sidewalk and the street in Mariemont?
Check with the Service Department first. The village has a right-of-way on every street and cares for trees in public areas, and it asks residents to call before cutting a tree that might belong to the village.
Does the village pick up branches from a tree job?
The village collects bundled limbs on its scheduled route, within size and weight limits. A full removal produces far more than that, so we chip and haul the wood as part of the job.
Is a tree in a National Historic Landmark village protected?
Landmark status recognizes the village's planning and design. It doesn't by itself make every private tree untouchable, but public trees are the village's, and some properties have their own review requirements. Ask the village if you are unsure.
