Settled Streets, Big Trees

Tree Service in Madeira tends to involve trees that have been in the family a long time. Census estimates show 92.2% of homes in Madeira are owner-occupied, and 91.6% of residents were living in the same house a year earlier. The median owner-occupied home is valued at $484,200. People stay, and so do the trees: oaks, maples, sycamores and tulip trees that were young when the neighborhoods filled in are now taller than the houses.

Madeira grew from a post town laid out largely in 1871 and named for landowner John Madeira. It incorporated as a village in 1910 and became a city in August 1959, and a 1970 annexation of South Kenwood from Columbia Township nearly doubled its size. That history means a mix of lot types: older homes near the small downtown, mid-century streets and the larger lots of the annexed area.

Spring brush pickup

Madeira's Public Works department runs a brush and limb pickup each year in mid-spring, by zone. Zone A goes first, Zone B the following week, and brush must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your zone's week. Only material that can be chipped is taken. Stumps, root balls, railroad ties and wood fencing are not, and anything that doesn't meet the guidelines is left at the curb. After the pickup the city delivers raw wood chips in full loads of 3 to 4 cubic yards to residents who sign up, with a warning not to pile raw chips against foundations or plants. If you want chips from your own trees instead, tell us at the estimate and we can leave a pile in a spot that won't smother the lawn or sit against the house.

That program is handy if you do your own light pruning in early spring. It doesn't help much with a removal in July or a storm-damaged limb in October. When we take a tree down, the chipping and hauling are included in the estimate, and we can leave chips on site if you want them.

The 1969 tornado and ordinary storms

In August 1969 an F3 tornado struck Madeira, killing four people and causing more than $3 million in damage. Tornadoes are rare, but summer thunderstorms are not, and a big tree with a hidden defect is the most common source of damage to homes here. We check for the warning signs: cracks at branch unions, cavities and fungal fruiting bodies at the base, dead tops and roots cut by past driveway or sewer work.

Stump Grinding in Cincinnati, OH

Madeira Questions

Will Madeira pick up the stump after a tree removal?

No. The city's brush program excludes stumps and root balls. Stump grinding turns the stump into chips you can use as mulch or have hauled away.

Can I just put tree work debris out for the spring pickup?

Brush that can be chipped and set out on time for your zone's week is accepted. Large logs, stumps and material set out at other times are not. For a removal, debris handling is part of our job.

How do I know if a big tree near my house is a risk?

Look for cracks, dead branches in the upper crown, mushrooms at the base, or a lean that has changed. If you see any of those, have the tree checked before the next storm season.

Should I take the free wood chips from the city?

They are useful as path or bed mulch once they have aged a few months. Madeira itself advises keeping raw chips away from foundations, plants and shrubs, because fresh chips can heat up and tie up nitrogen as they break down. Spread them thin, or let the pile sit through a season first.
