From Farm Township to Suburb

Tree Service in West Chester Township covers a lot of ground, literally. The township spans about 35.5 square miles in the southeast corner of Butler County, and at the 2020 census it had 65,242 residents, more than any other township in Ohio. In 1950 it had just 2,545. That growth turned farmland into subdivisions in stages, and the trees reflect it: old hedgerow trees and woodlots that survived along property lines, young street and yard trees from the newer developments, and everything in between. With that much ground and so many neighborhoods, no two visits look alike, so we walk each property before pricing it rather than quoting by phone from a description alone.

Until 2000 the township was officially Union Township. The Butler County commissioners created it from Liberty Township in 1823, and voters approved the change to West Chester, the name residents had long used, effective June 28, 2000. Voters turned down incorporating as a city three times, in 1988, 1989 and 1993, so tree rules here come through the township and Butler County rather than a city forestry department.

Old hedgerow trees

When fields were divided into lots, many developers kept the trees along the old fence lines. Those trees, often oaks, hickories, black walnuts, hackberries and ash, are now 60 to 100 years old and sit at the back of yards or on the line between two properties. They were never pruned for a suburban setting and often carry dead limbs over fences and sheds. Trees on a shared line need both owners to agree before major work.

Walnut and ash concerns

The City of Hamilton's forestry office reports that thousand cankers disease, which kills black walnut, has been confirmed in Butler County. It spreads through the walnut twig beetle and causes thinning crowns, yellowing leaves and dying branches. Emerald ash borer has spread throughout all of Ohio. If you have walnuts or ash on an old hedgerow, it is worth having them looked at, and moving their wood off the property should be done with care. Spotted lanternfly, an invasive planthopper that favors tree of heaven, is another pest Ohio asks residents to report.

What West Chester owners ask for

  • Removing dead ash and declining walnuts along back lot lines
  • Pruning mature hedgerow oaks that overhang decks and fences
  • Structural pruning on young yard trees in newer subdivisions
  • Removing trees damaged in summer thunderstorms
  • Stump grinding in lawns, beds and along fences

Parks next door

Voice of America MetroPark, on the 625-acre site of the former VOA Bethany Relay Station, and Keehner Park are both in the township. Trees on park land are managed by the park operators. If a park tree overhangs your yard, you can usually prune back to the line, but large work should be coordinated with the park.

West Chester Township Questions

The big tree on my back lot line is half on my neighbor's side. Who decides?

A tree whose trunk straddles the line is generally shared. Talk with your neighbor and agree in writing before removal or major pruning. We can meet both owners and give one estimate.

How do I know if my black walnut has thousand cankers disease?

Early signs are yellowing and wilting leaves, a thinning crown and branch dieback from the top down. Small cankers under the bark confirm it but need close inspection. Report suspected cases to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Does West Chester Township require a permit to remove a tree on my lot?

Private yard trees are generally the owner's to manage, but HOA covenants and any zoning conditions on your subdivision can apply. Check those before removing a tree the original plan required.

Can you grind stumps along a fence line?

Yes. Smaller grinders fit through standard gates and can work close to fences, though the last few inches next to posts may need hand work.
