A Planned Suburb Grows Up

Tree Service in Forest Park deals with neighborhoods that are younger than the old river towns but older than most of the region's suburbs. In 1935 the federal government set aside land here as part of Greenhills, one of three planned Greenbelt towns. When that plan was dropped in 1949, the undeveloped acreage went up for sale, and private developers Marvin Warner and Joseph Kanter bought it. The first homes opened in March 1956. Many of the shade trees planted around those first houses are now around seventy years old.

That age matters. Fast-growing species planted in the 1950s and 1960s, such as silver maple, are reaching the end of their safe life in small yards, and their limbs have grown far past what the original lots were designed for. Some owners also have ash that has died from emerald ash borer, which has spread throughout Ohio. Replacing a big removed tree with a smaller, longer-lived species set farther from the house is often the best long-term fix, and the city's reforesting program can help with that cost.

What the city offers

Forest Park runs several programs that help residents with trees:

  • Chipper Service, once a month from April through October. Material goes at the curb by 7 a.m. on your day, loose, with cut ends toward the street. Limbs must be under 8 inches in diameter, and each house gets about 10 minutes of chipping. Old firewood, lumber, fencing, leaves, roots and stumps are excluded, and commercial properties, apartments and homes on private drives don't qualify.
  • Tree/Limb Removal, which helps residents with dead or dying trees; the city says about 100 trees are removed or pruned this way each year.
  • Reforesting Forest Park, which subsidizes residents' costs to re-landscape, with approximately 100 new trees planted each year.

These are real help for routine needs. They are not set up for a large removal next to a house, an emergency after a storm or a stump that needs grinding. That is where a private tree company fits in.

Housing and lots

Forest Park had 20,189 residents in 2020, making it the second-largest city in Hamilton County, with 7,856 housing units on 6.46 square miles. Census estimates show 54.8% of homes are owner-occupied, with a median value of $190,400. Most lots are standard suburban sizes with room for one or two large trees, which means a failing tree is usually close to the house, garage or neighbor's fence.

Common Forest Park jobs

  • Removing dead ash before limbs drop
  • Pruning back from roofs and over driveways
  • Stump grinding, which the city chipper program doesn't cover

Forest Park Questions

Will the Forest Park chipper take the wood from my tree removal?

Only limbs under 8 inches, set out loose by 7 a.m. on your scheduled day, and only about 10 minutes' worth per house. Trunks, big limbs and stumps from a removal are beyond what the program handles, so we haul them.

Should I wait for the city's tree removal program?

If a tree is dead but not threatening anything, ask the city about its Tree/Limb Removal program. If it leans over the house, has cracked or has already dropped limbs, don't wait; have it looked at.

My silver maple is huge. Can it be made safer without removal?

Sometimes. Reducing long, heavy limbs and removing deadwood can lower the risk. If the trunk has major decay or the tree is badly split, removal is usually the better answer.

Do you grind stumps in Forest Park?

Yes. The city chipper service excludes stumps and roots, so grinding is a common add-on after a removal.
