Two Rivers and a Lot of Slope

Tree Service in Anderson Township is hillside work more often than not. The township covers about 31 square miles of southeastern Hamilton County, with the Ohio River along its southern edge and the Little Miami River forming its northern and western boundaries. Between them the land is rolling hills, and toward both rivers it breaks into steep, wooded hillsides. A lot of homes are built at the top of those slopes, with the backyard falling away into trees.

Why slopes change the job

A tree on a slope has a fall direction chosen for it by gravity, and a crew has to work with that. Wood cut on a hillside wants to roll, so we lower pieces on ropes and keep the work zone clear below. Equipment can't always reach, so climbers do more of the work. And roots on a slope hold soil; removing several trees from a steep bank at once can leave it open to erosion. On larger slope jobs we often recommend leaving stumps in place to keep holding the soil, and grinding only where you need the space. Before any slope work starts, we agree with you where wood will be stacked or chipped, which path crews will use to carry it up, and which plantings and walls need protection on the way.

A Tree City township

Anderson Township holds Tree City USA designation, first received in 2009. The township is unincorporated, so its zoning and public works rules come from the township rather than a city charter. The Anderson Parks district manages nine parks and the RecPlex, more than 500 acres in all, so many residential lots border park woods.

Who lives here

The 2020 census counted 44,088 residents and 16,962 housing units, mostly single-family homes. Lots range from compact subdivisions to large wooded parcels on the bluffs.

County drop-off on Turpin Lane

Anderson residents have one of Hamilton County's three free yard trimmings drop-off sites close by, at Bzak Landscaping, 3295 Turpin Lane off State Route 32. It is open weekdays and weekends from March 21 to December 6. Branches must be bundled, no more than 4 feet long and 12 inches thick, and only residents' own material is accepted, not loads from commercial crews. That makes it a good outlet for your own pruning. For removals, our crews chip and haul.

Typical Anderson work

  • Removing dead or leaning trees on steep backyard slopes
  • Pruning to open views toward the river valleys
  • Taking out dead ash, a problem across Ohio since emerald ash borer spread statewide
  • Clearing storm-damaged trees off driveways and fences
  • Clearing bush honeysuckle and other invasives from wooded edges
  • Selective stump grinding where slope stability allows

Near the airport

Lunken Airport lies just southwest of the township where the two rivers meet. Homes in that direction sometimes have height questions about tall trees; we can tell you what we see, but height rules near an airport are for the airport and the FAA to answer.

Anderson Township Questions

Should I grind the stumps on my steep Anderson Township hillside?

Often it is better not to. Stumps and roots keep holding soil for years while they decay. Grind only where you need flat ground for a lawn, path or bed.

Can I take my own branches to the Turpin Lane drop-off?

Yes, if you are a Hamilton County resident hauling your own trimmings in a pickup or a trailer under 8 feet. Bundle branches under 50 pounds, keep them to 4 feet and 12 inches thick, and leave out lumber, wire and soil.

Can you prune trees to open a river view?

Yes, by thinning and raising crowns rather than topping. Selective pruning can open a view while keeping the trees healthy and the slope stable. On park or neighbor land, the owner's permission comes first.
