Hamilton Does Things Its Own Way
Tree Service in Hamilton works under rules that differ from most of the region. Hamilton runs its own electric utility, its Urban Forestry Division handles line-clearance trimming for that system, and the city reports more than 13,000 trees in its parks, green spaces and rights-of-way. A municipal arborist reviews tree work in the public right-of-way and will inspect trees by appointment, including checking ash for emerald ash borer.
Tree lawn trees are the owner's job, with approval
In Hamilton, owners or occupants maintain the trees in the tree lawn, the strip between curb and sidewalk, including pruning, removal and stump grinding, under Ordinance 915.05. The city's Tree Ordinance also requires written approval from the city before pruning or removing a right-of-way tree. The approval application is free and goes to the Municipal Arborist, and if it is approved, a separate free Right-of-Way Permit from Public Works is needed too. We help you file both before we schedule the work.
The city itself trims or removes right-of-way and park trees only when power lines are involved. It doesn't remove dead tree-lawn trees for residents, though the arborist will inspect them.
Trees and city power lines
Hamilton Utilities holds easement rights to trim vegetation for electric clearance and prunes to ANSI-based standards, cutting back to a lateral branch or the trunk. Residents usually get a blue door card about four to five weeks before scheduled line clearance. Hamilton Utilities does not prune for telephone, cable or fiber lines. If a limb is touching a city power line, call the Electric Department rather than a private crew; for a downed or sparking line, Emergency Utility Service answers at (513) 785-7555 at all hours. Any additional pruning beyond clearance is the owner's responsibility, and that is where we come in.
Historic neighborhoods on the Great Miami
Hamilton grew along the Great Miami River and is the seat of Butler County. Its historic districts, Dayton Lane, German Village and Rossville, have older homes with mature trees on small lots and alleys. The city maintains only alley pavement; vegetation along alleys is the resident's job. The March 1913 flood killed about 200 residents and led to the Miami Conservancy District, and river-bottom neighborhoods still grow large, fast trees on deep, moist soils.
Pests the city tracks
Hamilton's forestry office lists emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, thousand cankers disease of walnut (confirmed in Butler County), spotted lanternfly, beech leaf disease and elm zigzag sawfly, which reached Ohio in 2023.
Brush disposal
Rumpke collects brush on garbage day in bundles under 4 feet and 50 pounds. The city also offers free chipping drop-off at the Water Reclamation Facility, 2451 River Road, on the second Saturday of the month, April through October, 8 a.m. to noon. For our jobs, debris is hauled.

Hamilton Questions
Do I need permission to cut down the tree in my Hamilton tree lawn?
Yes. The city requires written approval from the Municipal Arborist before pruning or removing a right-of-way tree, followed by a Right-of-Way Permit from Public Works. Both are free, and we help you file them.
Will the city remove a dead tree in front of my house?
Generally no. Hamilton works on right-of-way trees only when power lines are involved; owners are responsible for tree-lawn trees under Ordinance 915.05. The arborist will inspect a tree by appointment.
A branch is in the wire to my house. Who handles it?
If it is a Hamilton electric line, contact the Electric Department, or Emergency Utility Service at (513) 785-7555 if the line is down or sparking. The city does not clear phone or cable lines; once the electric line is safe, we can handle the rest of the tree.
Is there a tree company near me in Hamilton that knows the city process?
Yes. We work throughout Hamilton, from Rossville and German Village to Lindenwald and Southern Hills, and build the approval steps into our schedule.
