Florence and Its Trees

Tree Service in Florence takes place in a city that has kept up its Tree City USA standing for more than three decades. The Arbor Day Foundation has named Florence a Tree City USA every year since 1992. To qualify, the city keeps a tree board, a tree ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an annual Arbor Day observance. Those are city commitments for public trees, but they say something about what residents expect from tree work on their own lots too.

A city that kept growing

Florence grew up as a crossroads town; growth picked up after the Covington-Lexington Turnpike opened in 1836, and the population climbed quickly from 1950 to 1970 and kept rising after that. The 2020 census counted 31,946 people, up 6.7% from 2010, and the 2025 estimate is 34,018. It is the second-most populous city in Northern Kentucky and the state's largest city that isn't a county seat. Most of its 13,624 housing units were built in waves of suburban growth, and their yard trees come in waves too.

That shows in the trees we see. Neighborhoods from the 1960s and 1970s have big maples, oaks and pines that are now taller than the houses and sometimes declining. Newer subdivisions have ornamental pears, maples and evergreens planted close together that now crowd each other and the house.

Who lives here

Census estimates show 57.5% of Florence homes are owner-occupied, with a median value of $210,700, and 84.7% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier. Many homes are rentals, and on rental, condominium or association property, trees may be the responsibility of an association or property manager rather than the resident. If you aren't sure who owns a tree, check before you schedule work.

Florence Questions

Who handles a tree in the Florence city right-of-way?

Public trees are the city's. Report concerns to Florence Public Services through the Florence Y'ALL app or at (859) 647-5416.

I live in a Florence condo. Can I hire you for the tree outside my unit?

Often trees on condo or association property belong to the association. Check with your manager first; if they approve or hire the work, we can quote it.

Where can I take branches from my own pruning?

The Northern Kentucky solid waste guide lists yard waste sites in Burlington that accept branches and tree debris. Call them first for current hours, fees and limits.

When is the right time to remove a tree in Florence?

Dead or hazardous trees should come down as soon as practical, whatever the season. Planned removals of healthy trees are often easiest in late fall and winter, when the leaves are off, the ground is firmer and lawns and beds are dormant, so cleanup does less damage.

My subdivision trees are crowding each other. What are my options?

Thinning crowns and removing one tree from a crowded group often gives the rest room to grow. We look at which trees have the best structure and health and suggest keeping those, rather than pruning all of them back hard.
